Have an Alice in Wonderland party for Valentine’s Day

Why not have an Alice in Wonderland party on Valentine’s Day?

To make invitations:
Make the looking-glass invitations out of white paper folded at the top so the invitations will stand up. Use a square piece of aluminum foil, pasted on front page, for the looking glass. Paste tiny red hearts all around border and write your message on inside page. It could say:
“Come through the looking glass with me on February 14th!”

To make centerpiece:
Let the Queen of Hearts rule over your table as the centerpiece. A large round mixing bowl placed up-side-down holds her broad crepe-paper skirt. Take a piece of pink crepe paper about 18 inches square. Trim two sides slantways so that one end is only 12 inches wide. (This is head end.) With a ruler and pencil make a mark 4 inches down and another 9 inches down from top. First mark is at neck, second at waist. Tie a red ribbon bow tightly at waist and fit lower part of paper down over sides of bowl for skirt. Hold skirt in place with a bit of white glue.

Stuff upper part of body with a large handful of crumpled tissue paper. Paste edges of crepe paper together. Then tie another ribbon bow at neck. Stuff head same as body. Gather top of head together with string and cover top of head with Queen’s bonnet-a rectangular piece of colored paper folded in half and set on Queen’s head, as shown. Paint on face, arms, and decorations with red and black poster paint. Add some frilly lace cut from paper doilies. Make a scepter for the Queen to hold out of a thin stick with a paper heart pasted at one end. Stand Queen on a looking-glass (or a piece of cardboard covered with aluminum foil) in the middle of the table. Place a circle of pretty tarts all around the skirt of the Queen of Hearts.

To make place setting
Use a red crepe paper tablecloth. Decorate the edges of paper plates with red paper hearts and set each plate on a fancy lace paper doily.

The place cards are held by little Jacks of Hearts. Use real playing cards for the bodies and hinge them together at the top, back to back. Paste cardboard circles at top edge of cards for the heads. Paint on smiling faces and paste on little red paper triangles for caps.

Cut arms and hands from paper and pasted to back of playing cards, placing place card between hands as shown.

To make the place cards stand up, cut out feet from cardboard. Tape feet to bottom of front card, then to bottom of back card.

Since it will probably be a wintry day, you might want to serve a pot of hot chocolate with your heart shaped cookies.
