Deborah, this week’s hostess of “In Other Words” offered this verse as her response to a quote from C.S. Lewis.
‘Then He (Jesus) said to them all, ” If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily”, and follow Me.’ Luke 9:23 (NKJV)
or (in other words)
‘Then he said to all, “Anyone who wants to follow me must put aside his own desires and conveniences and carry his cross with him every day and keep close to me!” ‘
Luke 9:23 (TLB)
Deborah’s references called the “other words” that Oriah Mountain Dreamer wrote in her poem The Invitation to echo up from my heart.
These words, for me, have always represented the real-world “how do I apply this to my life?” answer to Jesus’ call to “take up my cross daily and follow.”
‘It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up, after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done to feed the children.
It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you, from the inside, when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.’
