Kathryn, that is a Very Clever Idea! And I think it’s one of the few ideas that you could have come up with that would be met with delight rather than the disdain that thirteen year olds work so hard to maintain. Kudos to you and that is one lucky kid, having you in her life!

What a fun list! One idea that I didn’t see on the very exhaustive theme list was what we did to celebrate my stepdaughter’s 13th birthday. We had asked her what theme she wanted for her party, and she taciturnly responded, “Umm, I’m thirteen?” (Translation: She thought she was too old and too cool for party theme.) Nonetheless, I ran with it. We played with the idea that 13 is considered unlucky, and served a black cat-shaped birthday cake, used a black tablecloth, and decorated the table with spilled salt and broken mirrors (actually tin foil-covered cardboard “shards”). To enter the party, you had to walk under a ladder. She loved it!

My daughter will be 2 in October and I’ve started thinking about this already. I don’t want to do anything with too many people because it will just overwhelm her.
