Outdoor Wednesday – but first you Must Zip Your Own jacket!

A cold, sparkling autumn day – perfect for visiting the tower on Fox Hill and enjoying the colors of fall.

If only Grammy didn’t join with kindergarten teachers and insist that a five year old girl is more than capable of zipping her jacket herself. A horrible struggle before we leave on our journey – the Drama is a Wonder To Behold :)

Outdoor Wednesday – “I Jumped As High As The Trees!”

When Maya was a baby visiting the fair, she would look at the children jumping in the slings and bounce up and down in her stroller. Every year she grew a little older, a little bigger (but not quite big enough) – every year we would stop and watch the children jumping in the slings. This was the activity that she envied the bigger kids for the most – she would look at them with longing and ask ” I’m not big enough yet???”

This year she was big enough.

Craft It Wednesday – Preserving Fall Leaves the Easy Way!

LeavesinAutumn

When Grandmother was a girl…
(I love stories that begin with that phrase :) )

When Grandmother was a Girl Scout (even better!) we would prepare autumn leaves for crafts by pressing them with a hot iron between sheets of waxed paper. Even then, there were drawbacks to this method – lots of little girl scouts with singed fingers.

Now that I have a granddaughter -
who knows where the iron is and who buys waxed paper anymore?

There is an updated version of preserving leaves with wax (or sort-of wax) that’s a lot easier and no one gets burned. Leaves will keep their color and remain pliable if dipped in any of the liquid no wax floor shiners. ( like Mop ‘n Glo)

We pour the liquid into a pie plate, dip one side of the leaf, lay it on newspaper to dry for a half hour or so, then dip the other side. If we want to extend the project (and play with paint brushes), then we paint the shine on.

By the next day, the leaves are completely dry and ready to use in garlands, wreaths, bouquets…
Acorns, pinecones – even rocks! – can be polished using the same method.

Seasonal, Fun, Fast.

These aren’t my Prize Winning Pumpkins – I didn’t craft a one of them. These are pumpkins we saw on display at the fair on Sunday. ( you know… the fair where Maya won first prize for her diorama... :) )

Some one else’s crafting can yield some great inspiration!
